<초록>

이 연구는 개념, 재현, 경험을 중심으로 장애사 연구 현황과 성과를 밝히고 향후 발전 방향을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 그동안 장애 연구는 주로 의학 분야의 치료나 재활, 또는 사회복지학의 복지 정책과 관련된 논의가 주를 이루었다. 최근 인문․사회과학은 근대 권력이 병리화하고 타자화했던 장애인에 관심을 기울이기 시작했다. 이는 근대의 정상/비정상, 장애/비장애 이분법을 성찰하는 과정에서 등장했으며 마이너리티 연구의 진전에 힘입은 것이기도 하다. 신유물론과 포스트휴머니즘과 같은 최근 철학적 사조의 변화 역시 장애 연구를 추동한 이론적 배경이라고 할 수 있다. 장애 역사는 아직 양적으로 많은 성과가 축적되었다고 볼 수는 없다. 하지만 역사, 문학, 미디어학, 사회학, 사회복지학 등과 학제 간 연구를 통해 역사 지식의 관습적인 생산방식을 벗어나 새로운 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 그렇지만 과제도 적지 않다. 우선, 장애 역사는 장애인의 경험을 통해 사회적 차별을 입증하는 수준을 넘어야 한다. 기존의 ‘억압받는 피지배층’에 새로운 타자를 추가하는 데에 만족할 수 없다. 장애 역사는 장애인의 경험을 마이너리티 역사의 맥락에 배치하고 차이를 정치화하는 한편, 근대 신체 규율과 정상성을 해체하는 문제를 급진화해야 할 것이다. 이를 위해서는 장애인의 신체적 손상이나 고통이 다른 사회적 범주(계급, 인종, 젠더/섹슈얼리티)와 어떻게 상호작용하며 새로운 통찰을 발휘했는지에 주목해야 한다. 더 나아가, 장애인/비장애인, 인간/비인간적 타자의 이분법을 해체하고 그 상호 관계를 성찰하는 작업이 필요하다. 몸들을 횡단하고 자연적인 것과 인공적인 것을 가로지르는 장애의 경험은 인간주의를 넘어 새로운 역사의 세기로 인도할 수 있을 것이다.

This study reviews the current status of disability history research, elucidates its achievements and significance, and explores future directions for advancement. Historically, disability research has predominantly centered on medical fields, such as treatment and rehabilitation, or on discussions related to welfare services in social welfare studies. However, recent developments in the humanities, including history, have focused on the ways modern power has governed, pathologized, and othered people with disabilities, making their bodies subjects of control. This shift not only reflects a critique of the modern normal/abnormal and disabled/non- disabled binary but is also influenced by the progress of minority studies. Theoretical frameworks such as new materialism and posthumanism have also provided critical momentum to disability research.

This study investigates the achievements of disability history research by examining key areas: terms and concepts, representation, and experience. It considers whether the category of “people with disabilities” is a social construct formed in the modern era and investigates the presence of disability discrimination in pre-modern times. The study also explores how representations of disability have been used as symbols of colonialism and discusses the necessity of integrating disability research with postcolonial theory. Finally, it examines the relationship between the experiences and identities of people with disabilities, proposing approaches that move beyond singular identities to reveal intersecting experiences and social differences.

This analysis underscores the importance of expanding disability history research beyond traditional discussions of treatment and welfare to include broader social and material contexts, using diverse academic methodologies and theoretical resources to pave new paths in the field.
