본 연구는 지역사회중심교육이 발달장애인의 도전적 행동 완화에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 연구참여자의 개별 특성에 맞춘 일상생활 교육을 지역사회에서 실시하고 다양한 사회적 경험을 제공하였다. 연구는 1년 8개월간 진행되었으며, 단일사례연속설계를 적용하였다. 사전 평가는 MAS와 QABF로 도전적 행동의 기능과 선행 동기를 분석하였고, 이후 행동은 매일 관찰·기록되었으며, 지역사회중심교육의 실시 횟수와 활동 내용은 주 단위로 정리해 상관성을 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 참여자 5명 모두에서 도전적 행동의 빈도와 강도가 현저히 완화되었으며, Tau-U 효과크기는 .65~.78 범위로 나타나(p<.05) 중간 이상에서 큰 효과를 보였다. 또한 행동 중재와 환경 조정을 통한 개별화 교육이 병행되면서 효과가 강화되었다. 이러한 결과는 지역사회중심교육이 성인 발달장애인의 도전적 행동을 완화하고 일상생활 영위를 가능하게 하는 효과적인 교육적 접근임을 보여준다. 나아가 발달장애인이 사회 구성원으로서 ‘보통의 삶(ordinary life)’을 살아가기 위한 최적의 교육 환경이자 필수 지원 체계임을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 발달장애인 평생교육의 실제 현장에 적용 가능한 근거를 마련하고, 향후 성인 발달장애인의 삶의 질 향상과 기능적 성장 촉진을 위한 교육 모델 개발에 활용될 수 있다.

This study examined the effects of community-based education (CBSE) on reducing challenging behaviors in adults with developmental disabilities. Individualized daily living education was provided in community settings, offering diverse social experiences over 20 months using a single-case multiple baseline design. Baseline assessments employed the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS) and Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF) to identify behavioral functions and antecedent conditions. Participants’ behaviors were observed daily, and CBSE activities were organized weekly to analyze correlations with behavioral changes. Results showed a significant reduction in both frequency and intensity of challenging behaviors across all five participants. Tau-U effect sizes ranged from .65 to .78 (p < .05), indicating medium to large effects. Moreover, individualized education with behavior intervention and environmental adjustments further enhanced outcomes. These findings confirm CBSE as an effective approach for mitigating challenging behaviors, sustaining daily life, and supporting adults with developmental disabilities in pursuing an “ordinary life” within their community. This study offers evidence for lifelong education and provides a practical basis for future educational models that improve quality of life and functional growth.
